10 Years After BP Deepwater Horizon

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the catastrophic BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which caused countless residents in North Florida to lose income and face what seemed like impossible obstacles. LSNF proudly helped low-income wage-earners and small businesses as they maneuvered the ever-changing claims processes, helping them receive more than $3 million over the past 10 years.

This story is strikingly similar to what we currently see in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. During a crisis, existing challenges are magnified, including those already living without sufficient income to pay the bills.  Legal aid is a critical part of addressing the challenges that arise from a crisis. LSNF filled a need to ensure residents affected by the BP Deepwater Horizon spill were supported 10 years ago and today, LSNF continues to remain open to provide free legal help to those facing legal obstacles like evictions, unemployment, accessing public benefits, IRS tax benefits, and more.
